Heritage and History

For most of its history Guisborough was part of the North Riding of Yorkshire, from 1974 to 1996 part of the county of Cleveland and at present one of the major towns of the borough of Redcar and Cleveland.

The town is listed in the Domesday Book and the ruined Gisborough Priory dates back to the 12th century.

Historic Sites Include:

  • Saint Nicholas' Anglican Church, home to the de Brus cenotaph and built mainly from stone taken from the Priory.
  • Gisborough Hall, the ancestral home of Lord Gisborough, which now serves as a hotel and popular venue for wedding receptions.
  • The Alfred Waterhouse-designed Gothic revival Hutton Hall, situated at Hutton Lowcross which had its own station on the erstwhile Middlesbrough-Guisborough branch of the North Eastern Railway (closed in 1964).
  • A curious 18th century market cross decorated with sundial and weather vane is located at the top of Westgate. Originally a Market cross to 'remind men that they had a sense of morality in the market' this was replaced with a ball as the Puritans banned the siting of market crosses.
  • Sunnyfield House, a Grade II Listed building owned and run by Guisborough Town Council.

Stockton council set to develop High Street

Hunters are proud Stockton has been voted as the 6th best place to live according to the Telegraph, click here for more information.

These improvements will see the street transformed with open spaces, new car parks and a growing number and variety of shops.

The first phase started at the South End of the High Street (opposite the Castlegate Shopping Centre) on Monday 24th September 2012 and was completed early summer 2013. There are now five further phases with the whole project expected to be complete in early 2015.

The council comments:

"We'll make sure access to shops is maintained at all times with at least a three metre walkway available, with noise, dust and distribution kept to a minimum. the businesses still need you to come and shop in the High Street so why not combine your journey and take a peek through out open fencing to see what we're up to?"

Three further phases will follow providing a focal point in the central area incorporating seating, grass and a stylish water feature as well as a dedicated space for the regular market, an automation, and a flexible space for events and specialist markets.

Also being created is a dedicated walkway to connect the riverside and the end of the High Street, along with new spaces to sit, relax and play.

A new home for Hunters

The customer services expert is making a new home for herself at Hunters Teesside as the new personal agent for an area she knows and loves.

Middlesbrough girl Nichola has joined Teesside’s fastest-growing estate agents after a career in customer service that saw her work as a deputy manager in a local hotel and as customer care coordinator for Middlesbrough Teaching and Learning Centre.

Now Acklam-born Nichola is combining her lifelong passions for homes and customer service for her dream job.

She said: “Customer service is my passion. Having explored all avenues in that direction, I wanted a new challenge in my life – and this is it.

“I’ve always been passionate about houses, properties and interior design, while I’ve lived in Middlesbrough all my life and used to live in Normanby, so the TS6 postcode is an area I know and love. In fact, I plan to move back there very soon.

“It’s a truly desirable location with a full and varied range of properties for all budgets and requirements. There’s detached, semi-detached and terraces houses and bungalows of all sizes, ranging from nearly &300,000 to &80,000. So first-team buyers and those looking for a family home are sure to find something that suits.

“We’re already successfully selling properties in Eston and Normanby, but I’m looking to make a real impact there. I’ve joined a great team at Hunters, who are dedicated to helping people sell their property and find a new home.”

Nichola is Hunters’ third recent recruit. Charlotte Jenkins has joined the estate agents as sales progressor, while Leah Gray is a sales negotiator.

Hunters relocated to new &250,000 premises at 146 Linthorpe Road, Middlesbrough, earlier this year.
